How to Bring Your Beloved Pet to New Zealand?

As an animal lover planning to move to New Zealand, you may wonder how you can bring your furry companion along with you. Well, it’s essential to know that Biosecurity New Zealand has specific conditions that must be met for live animals to enter the country.

The entry conditions will depend on the type of animal and its country of origin. These requirements are outlined in the appropriate Import Health Standard, so make sure to check them diligently to ensure a smooth transition for your pet.

In some cases, a Permit to Import may be required, and your animals might need to undergo Post Entry Quarantine at a MAF (Ministry for Primary Industries) approved facility. Certain animals may also be prohibited due to their protected status under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

If your pet does require quarantine, it’s essential to contact a reputable quarantine facility in New Zealand beforehand and reserve a space for them. Once you book a space, the quarantine facility will provide you with a letter of confirmation, which you’ll need to include with your permit application.

Keep in mind that all animal products, including pet food and other animal-derived products, also need to meet Import Health Standards. This ensures the safety and well-being of both your pets and New Zealand’s environment.

For cats and dogs, specific rules apply, and you must check the requirements in the personal travel section. Fortunately, cats and dogs coming from countries like Australia, United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Hawaii, and Singapore do not require quarantine, but they do need certification and will be inspected for ticks upon arrival.

If your pet requires medication, it may be possible to import the medicine with approval from the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Group.

Import Health Standards (IHS) are essential documents that outline the conditions for importing live animals and animal products into New Zealand. They cover various aspects, including origin, transit, importation, and quarantine requirements.

For cats and dogs, there are four registered MAF quarantine facilities in New Zealand. If a post-entry quarantine period is necessary, a Permit to Import will not be issued without a letter from the quarantine facility confirming the space reservation for your beloved companion.

Here are the registered facilities:

Auckland Quarantine Ltd (Auckland)

Pethaven Quarantine Services (Auckland)

Qualified Pet Services (Auckland)

Canterbury Quarantine Services Ltd (Christchurch)

If you’re planning to bring your beloved pet to New Zealand, understanding the requirements and having a reliable plan in place will ensure a seamless and comfortable journey for your furry friend.
